Behind the Product

The Story Behind MF Compare

MF Compare was conceptualized and built by Aswin V, a Product Manager and Business Analyst with experience in the FinTech industry.

The idea started with a simple problem Aswin faced himself: comparing two mutual funds and trying to understand which one was actually better was surprisingly difficult. Different platforms presented different ratings, metrics, and information, often making it harder rather than easier to make a meaningful comparison.

That led to a simple question: if I am finding this difficult, aren't other mutual fund investors facing the same problem?

With experience in business analysis, product management, financial technology, product strategy, requirements analysis, and digital product development, Aswin decided to build a solution around the problem rather than simply work around it.

That became MF Compare: a product designed to make mutual fund comparison in India simpler, transparent, and data-driven.

The platform enables investors to compare mutual funds side by side, understand historical performance, returns, risk, fund characteristics, and ₹100 NAV growth, and evaluate funds using transparent calculations rather than relying solely on ratings or promotional recommendations.

MF Compare follows a product-led and unbiased approach, with the focus on helping investors understand the differences between funds and conduct better mutual fund research.

The goal is simple: make mutual fund analysis easier to understand, so Indian investors can compare, analyze, and invest better.

Why MF Compare Exists: The Problem with Traditional Fund Portals

Most commercial financial websites in India are designed like trading terminals: crowded with popups, aggressive buy/sell signals, sponsored fund ads, and subjective star ratings that change every quarter.

Moreover, many platforms promote Regular Mutual Fund plans because they earn recurring trailing commissions from distributors, quietly eroding investor wealth over 15–20 year horizons.

MF Compare takes a different path: We focus strictly on clarity, mathematical rigor, and long-term investor education. We encourage exploring Direct Plans, evaluating rolling return consistency, and understanding peak-to-trough drawdowns.

Key Features Designed for Long-Term Investors

AMFI Code Search: Search any Indian mutual fund scheme by name, AMC, or 6-digit AMFI scheme code (e.g. 118546, 122639).
Top 3 Rolling Screener: Filter top 3 schemes dynamically across 1Y, 3Y, 5Y, 7Y, and 10Y rolling periods and 10 categories.
Side-by-Side Comparator: Compare up to 3 schemes with ₹100 growth overlay, CAGR %, max drawdown, initiation date, and total AUM.
Lumpsum & SIP Growth Math: Evaluate exact outcomes for ₹10,000 lumpsum and ₹1,000 monthly SIP started at fund initiation.
14 Financial Calculators: Plan retirement, SIP, SWP, goal delays, asset allocation, and capital gains tax with inflation toggles.
Direct vs. Regular TER Impact: Calculate wealth lost to distributor commissions over 10–30 year timeframes.

How to Evaluate Mutual Funds Responsibly

1. Look Beyond 1-Year Returns

Short-term returns are heavily influenced by market momentum and sector cycles. Evaluate performance over 3, 5, and 10-year rolling periods to gauge true fund manager skill.

2. Examine Maximum Drawdown

Max drawdown measures the worst peak-to-trough decline a fund experienced during market crashes (e.g. 2008, 2020). Lower drawdowns protect your downside risk.

3. Prefer Direct Plans Over Regular Plans

Direct Plans have lower Total Expense Ratios (TER) because no distributor commissions are paid out. Over 20 years, this difference can compound into lakhs of rupees in savings.

4. Remember: Past Performance Is Not a Guarantee of Future Returns

Historical NAV returns show how a fund navigated previous market cycles, but past performance does not guarantee future results. Market conditions, fund manager transitions, and economic shifts mean long-term asset allocation and risk management should always guide your investment choices.
